Making the Most of The Easter Holidays: 6 Simple Ways to Have Fun This Spring

The school bags are tucked away, and the Easter holidays are officially here. For many of us, it’s a chance to slow down, but it can also feel like a challenge to keep everyone entertained.

Recently, the government updated its guidance on screen time, suggesting that for younger children, "less is definitely more" to help with development and sleep. At Madlug, we think that’s a great excuse to zip up our jackets, grab a backpack, and head out into the fresh air!

1. Nature Walks (In Any Weather)

Don’t let the typical April showers stop you; there’s something grounding about getting outside when you’re dressed in the right clothes to face the elements! Whether it's a local forest or just a loop around the block, a rainy walk is a great way to reset everyone’s mood and get some fresh air. Encourage your kids to explore their surroundings, and even make it a fun scavenger hunt!

2. Easter Egg Hunts

You don’t need to attend a massive ticketed event to have a bit of fun. Hiding a few small treats around the garden, or even just around the living room on a particularly grey day, turns a normal afternoon into a bit of an adventure for younger kids.

3. Creative Arts & Crafts

You don’t need a professional craft kit to get creative. Cardboard boxes, some glue, and a bit of imagination can go a long way! This is also a nice chance to make something small, like a card or a painted stone, to leave on a neighbour's doorstep as a random act of kindness.

4. Family Movie Marathons

Screens aren't the enemy, but the goal is to make them a shared experience rather than a solo one. Pick a series of films, grab the blankets, and settle in together so that the movie becomes a conversation rather than just background noise.

5. Invite someone for a cuppa!

Easter is a great time to reach out to someone who might be spending the holidays on their own. Whether it’s meeting a neighbour for a walk or sharing a simple cup of tea and a biscuit, these small moments of connection show that everyone deserves a place where they feel seen and included. It’s a powerful way to look out for one another.

6. A Quick Community Clean-Up

On your next walk to the park, consider bringing a pair of gloves and a bin bag. Spending just fifteen minutes picking up litter is a practical, hands-on way to teach children that we all have a responsibility to look after the community we live in.

For many children in the care system, holidays can be a difficult or uncertain time. As we enjoy these moments, let’s remember that simply showing up and being there for one another is what matters most. Whether you’re splashing in puddles or tucked up on the sofa, we hope you have a peaceful and purposeful Easter break.
