The Lasting Impact of Fostering: The Barr Family’s Fostering Journey

"It enriches your own family's experience massively and impacts you in only a positive way."

When Dickie Barr and his wife Janice became short-term foster carers, they expected to provide a few weeks of care. Instead, they received a phone call about Charlene, a one-year-old who was very ill, and had spent her entire life in hospital.

What began as a temporary stay turned into a lifetime of love. Charlene was eventually adopted into the family, becoming the heart of a household of six children.

Charlene’s journey wasn't without its challenges, from complex medical needs to the emotional hurdles of attachment. However, her courage left an indelible mark on the Barr family. Her siblings were inspired to pursue roles in healthcare and education, and two of Dickie’s children went on to become foster carers themselves.

Before she passed away in 2010, Charlene’s passion led her to raise funds for a school in Uganda, a project that continues to inspire, even today.

Watch Dickie share his family's moving journey in the video below:

Dickie’s story is a beautiful reminder that when we open our homes young people, we don't just change their lives; we enrich our own. Fostering created a legacy of empathy in the Barr family that is still growing today.
