World Children's Day: 5 Facts You Need to Know About the Care System

On World Children’s Day we celebrate the rights and wellbeing of children around the world. Today we would like to shine a light on children in the care system. While many of us take for granted the stability and support in our lives, children in care face unique challenges that deserve our attention and action.

Here are five key facts about the care system to consider this Children’s Day:

  1. One child enters the care system every 15 minutes

Across the UK, 107,000 children and young people are in care.

  1. Many children in care experience multiple placements each year

In England, one in ten children move between three or more placements within a 12-month period. These moves can disrupt their emotional wellbeing and stability.

  1. 4 out of 5 have moved placements with their belongings in bin bags

An alarming four out of five children in care report that their belongings were packed in bin bags when they were moved between placements. This practice often leaves lasting effects on their self-esteem and sense of worth.

  1. 60% said their belongings were lost or damaged in a move

According to a recent survey, 60% of children and young people in care said that their belongings were either lost or damaged during a move.

  1. In many cases children are moved with little notice

In many cases, children in care are moved with little notice—sometimes less than 24 hours.
